Storefront for Brownsville will be open from May 4 - May 31, 2019
Living Archive Gallery
The Living Archive Gallery at the Storefront for Brownsville celebrates Brownsville’s past, present, and future through an interactive exhibition that showcases historical artifacts from the Brownsville Heritage House. This exhibition aims to celebrate Brownsville's rich history, and create a platform for contemporary narratives and cultural preservation, that invites Brownsville residents to submit their own objects, personal stories, or artwork to amplify the thriving culture that continues to exist in Brownsville today. Working with young people from the Brownsville Community Justice Center, youth will be introduced to curatorial and placemaking practices and assist with the selection of objects to be displayed at the exhibition. The Living Archive Gallery is curated and organized by Layman Lee a Brooklyn native who began working in Brownsville in 2013 to create MGB POPS, a pop-up shipping container market, and community space. Since then, shes worked with residents and local stakeholder groups to realize over 20 projects that brought community together to improve public space. Layman is a multidisciplinary artist and designer working in the belief that every project should be equitable, innovative, and foster positive social and environmental change.
